     Magnesium hydroxide is a white crystal or powder.  Molecular formula: Mg(OH)2 Molecular weight: 58.32 Aqueous solution is alkaline.  Bulk density: 2.36g/cm3.  Soluble in dilute acid and ammonium salt solutions, almost insoluble in water and alcohol.  Its solubility in water (18℃) is 0.0009g/100g.  Easy to absorb carbon dioxide from the air.  It becomes a hexagonal crystal system when heated to more than 200℃ in an alkaline solution.  It decomposes at 350℃ to form magnesium oxide and water.  Loss of water is converted to magnesium oxide at temperatures above 500℃.

      A new wet process for the synthesis of magnesium stearate by saponification of stearic acid and magnesium hydroxide in water medium.  Compared with the traditional double decomposition process, the new process has significantly reduced the reaction temperature, the reaction time, the ratio of liquid to solid of the reaction material, and the wet mass fraction of the filter cake.  The optimum process conditions are as follows: the first dosage of alkali 50% stoichiometric ratio, the reaction material liquid-solid ratio 3:1, reaction temperature, pre-reaction time;  The second addition of alkali time, continued reaction time.

      Other uses: Magnesium hydroxide is an excellent flame retardant for plastics and rubber products.  Widely used in PP, PE, EVA, PVC, ABS, HIPS, PA, epoxy resin, rubber, paint, etc.  Because of the high thermal decomposition temperature (310 °C) of Mg(OH)2, it is more suitable for engineering plastics with high processing temperature, such as nylon 6(PA6,PA66).  In general, the oxygen index of flame retardant index of aluminum hydroxide ATH is obviously improved, while the effect of magnesium hydroxide MH is better. Therefore, in practical use, they should be combined to achieve better flame retardant and smoke elimination effect.  In order to meet the needs of more customers, the company can surface active treatment of MH, or with other flame retardants for compound, and provide consulting services.
