How to Select Calcium Carbonate
Part 1: First and Foremost, Define Your Intended Use (This is the most critical step!)
Calcium carbonate is primarily divided into the following major categories, corresponding to different uses:
Food Grade Calcium Carbonate: Used for nutritional fortification, acidity regulation, etc.
Pharmaceutical Grade Calcium Carbonate: Used for preparing calcium tablets, antacids, etc.
Industrial Grade Calcium Carbonate: Used for fillers, building materials, chemical processes, etc.
Reagent Grade Calcium Carbonate: Used for laboratories and scientific research.
Part 2: Selection Guide by Intended Use
1. If used for Food (e.g., baking, calcium supplementation, beverages)
Key Metrics: Purity, Heavy Metal Content, Microbial Indicators.
Selection Points:
Look for Standards: The packaging must be clearly labeled with "Food Additive" or "Food Grade" and comply with relevant regulations such as GB 1886.214 (China's National Food Safety Standard).
Check the Ingredient List: Choose pure calcium carbonate with a single ingredient and no other additives.
Choose the Form:
Powdered: Easy to mix, suitable for making bread, noodles, milk powder, protein powder, etc.
Granular: Dissolves more slowly, often used for directly compressed calcium tablets.
Important Note: Never use Industrial Grade or Reagent Grade calcium carbonate as a substitute for Food Grade, as it may contain harmful impurities.
2. If used for Pharmaceuticals (e.g., homemade calcium tablets or pharmaceutical excipients)
Key Metrics: Extremely high purity, strict pharmacopoeia standards.
Selection Points:
Must Comply with Pharmacopoeia: In China, it must meet the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" standards. It is usually directly marked as "Pharmaceutical Excipient" or "Pharmacopoeia Grade."
High Purity: Pharmaceutical grade calcium carbonate has stricter limits for heavy metal impurities like lead and arsenic than food grade.
