Flame Retardant Mechanism of Magnesium Hydroxide
Magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂ inhibits combustion via three core functional mechanisms:
- Endothermic Cooling EffectWhen exposed to temperatures above 330°C, Mg(OH)₂ undergoes endothermic decomposition, absorbing roughly 1,300 J/g of heat and releasing water vapor. This process effectively cools polymer substrates and dilutes flammable volatile gases within the combustion zone.
- Dense Protective Carbon Layer FormationDivalent magnesium ions accelerate polymer aromatization and generate compact graphite carbon layers during combustion. The formed char acts as an impermeable physical barrier, blocking heat and oxygen penetration while suppressing the release of flammable volatile substances.
- High-Efficiency Smoke SuppressionThe magnesium oxide residues produced after decomposition feature high specific surface areas, which efficiently adsorb smoke particles. Smoke density can be reduced by up to 80%, significantly improving evacuation safety for enclosed spaces such as buildings, tunnels and vehicles.
